The Maricopa Medical Center Department of Surgery, Division of Burns, Trauma & Surgical Critical Care is offering an ACGME-accredited 1-year Surgical Critical Care (SCC) Residency beginning each July. Applicants must be board-eligible or certified by the American Board of Surgery by having completed an accredited general surgery residency prior to matriculation. Successful completion of the intense, multidisciplinary SCC program will qualify the Resident for the American Board of Surgery Examination in Added Qualification for Surgical Critical Care.
Maricopa Medical Center is a busy, inner-city 449-bed Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center (www.aztraumacenter.com) and home to the Arizona Burn Center (www.azburncenter.com). SCC residents will benefit from a cooperative educational relationship between the faculty of Maricopa Medical Center and the Mayo Clinic Hospital (Arizona) Critical Care Unit, a private, highly specialized 208-bed healthcare facility. Each site has its own ACGME-accredited general surgery training program and provides continuous, in-house intensivist coverage serving as an additional educational resource for the SCC resident.
A significant didactic curriculum and self-learning goals will be achieved under the guidance of board-certified critical care faculty. This intense, multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional approach will provide educational exposure that includes the procedural and administrative skills necessary to care for critically-ill patients, manage critical care units, teach critical care curricula, and conduct quality critical care research. Furthermore, the many facets of trauma and acute care surgery as well as significant exposure to burn surgery will be provided in order to give each SCC resident the opportunity to maintain their general surgical skills and allow long-term flexibility with job opportunities as a surgical intensivist and trauma and acute care surgeon.
If desired, further formal operative experience may be obtained with an additional 12-month fellowship in the field(s) of trauma and acute care surgery or burn surgery. This additional operative training will yield either a Trauma & Acute Care Surgery Certificate from Maricopa Medical Center or a Burn Certificate from the Arizona Burn Center.
